Visiting Qutub Minar during the daytime is always a delightful experience, but seeing it under the night sky takes it to an entirely different level. Recently, I had the chance to explore this iconic UNESCO World Heritage site after sunset, and the experience was nothing short of magical. The illuminated tower, the calm ambiance, and the historical charm created an unforgettable evening.
A Glimpse into History
The story of Qutub Minar dates back to the 12th century when Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, laid its foundation in 1192. Built to celebrate his victory over the Rajputs, the minaret was meant to be a symbol of Islamic dominance. However, Aibak could only complete the first storey before his death. His successor, Iltutmish, added three more storeys, and later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq constructed the fifth and final storey after some damage due to an earthquake. The tower stands 72.5 meters tall and is adorned with intricate carvings and verses from the Quran, reflecting the architectural brilliance of the era.
The Enchanting Ambiance
As the sun set and the sky turned a deep shade of indigo, the Qutub Minar slowly lit up, standing tall like a golden beacon. The intricate carvings on the red sandstone became more prominent under the soft, warm lights. The air was cooler, and the usual hustle of daytime tourists had given way to a more serene and peaceful atmosphere. Couples strolled hand in hand, families admired the structure, and photographers eagerly tried to capture the perfect shot.

It was only in 2017 that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, introduced the night viewing experience as part of their "Adopt a Heritage" program. The idea was to promote heritage tourism and offer visitors a chance to see this historic marvel in a completely new light—quite literally. Since then, the night show has become immensely popular among both locals and tourists.
How to Reach Qutub Minar
Reaching Qutub Minar is quite simple, whether you are a local or a traveler. Here are the best options:
By Metro: The easiest and most convenient way is via the Delhi Metro. The nearest station is Qutub Minar Metro Station on the Yellow Line. From there, it’s just a short 10-minute auto-rickshaw ride to the monument.
By Car: If you prefer driving, Qutub Minar is well-connected by road. Parking is available near the site, though it can get crowded during peak hours.
By Bus: Several DTC buses pass by the Mehrauli area, making it accessible from various parts of Delhi.
Tips for a Night Visit
Entry Timings: Night visits are usually allowed from 7 PM to 10 PM. It’s best to check online for the latest timings and ticket availability.
Tickets: You can book tickets through the official ASI website or can buy it directly from the ticket counter adjacent to the car parking.
Carry Light: Since it’s an evening visit, travel light and avoid carrying large bags.
Photography: Night photography enthusiasts should bring a tripod to capture the beauty of the illuminated monument.
