KINNAUR
The Perilous Beauty of Kinnaur:
My Three Unforgettable Road Trips
Kinnaur, the mystical land of Himachal Pradesh, is known for its breathtaking landscapes, treacherous roads, and adrenaline-pumping adventures. My journey through these dangerous roads was spread across three different trips—each with its own story, challenges, and memories. From my first visit to Kalpa in 2013 with my wife, to venturing near the Indo-China border at Poo with my friends in 2014, and finally experiencing the rugged beauty of Chitkul with my family and kids in 2022—each trip has left an indelible mark on my soul.

Kalpa 2013: A Romantic Yet Thrilling Escape
My first encounter with the daunting roads of Kinnaur was in 2013 when my wife and I embarked on a road trip to Kalpa. As we left Shimla and entered the Kinnaur region, the landscape transformed dramatically. The narrow roads carved into sheer cliffs with deep gorges on one side sent shivers down my spine. The Hindustan-Tibet Highway, also known as NH-5, is infamous for its blind curves, landslides, and hair-raising tunnels.
The moment we reached Kalpa, the fear of the journey was replaced by sheer awe. The Kinner Kailash range stood majestically before us, wrapped in a blanket of clouds. The air was crisp, the silence divine, and the serenity unmatched. We spent our days visiting ancient monasteries, walking through apple orchards, and gazing at the snow-capped peaks while sipping warm tea. It was a road trip filled with romance, adventure, and the realization of how tiny we are in the face of nature's grandeur.
Poo 2014: A Daredevil’s Dream
A year later, my hunger for adventure took me deeper into Kinnaur, this time to Poo—a small yet significant town near the Indo-China border. This trip with my friends was the ultimate test of nerves. The road from Kalpa to Poo is a true marvel of human engineering, but also one of the deadliest routes I have ever driven on. With vertical drops into the Sutlej River and barely enough space for two vehicles to pass, every turn felt like a gamble.
Our excitement peaked as we reached Poo, a town steeped in history and surrounded by barren, rugged mountains. The landscape here is starkly different from the lush greenery of Kalpa—harsh yet mesmerizing. We explored the remote villages, interacted with the locals, and admired the sheer isolation of the region. The border roads here are heavily patrolled, adding an element of thrill to our journey. It was an adventure that tested our limits, both physically and mentally.

Chitkul 2022: A Family Adventure Like No Other
Fast forward to 2022, and I found myself once again navigating the infamous roads of Kinnaur—this time with my family and kids. The destination was Chitkul, India’s last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. This trip was different, as I was not just responsible for myself but also for my little ones. Every sharp turn, every falling rock, and every narrow pass seemed even more daunting with my family onboard.
Despite the nerve-wracking drive, the reward at the end was priceless. Chitkul, perched at 11,320 feet, was nothing short of a paradise. The Baspa River flowing through the valley, the wooden houses, and the stunning mountain backdrop made it a scene straight out of a painting. We spent time playing by the river, savoring local delicacies, and experiencing the warmth of Kinnauri hospitality. It was a road trip that brought adventure and bonding together in a way I never imagined.
